But weddings are both sentimental and serious occasions. I Do Jamaica magazine brings you this serious moment, so you can be prepared to make the sentimental ones truly spectacular

Before the wedding

Marriage License

You can be married within 24 hours of arriving in Jamaica – if you applied for your marriage license prior to your arrival. If not, you’ll need to obtain one from the Ministry of Justice; it is a same day (3 hour) process. There is a fee of USD $50 and your marriage license is valid for 3 months.

Once all the necessary documents are reviewed and found satisfactory, the license will be issued.

NB. Since Jamaica is an English speaking country, all documents that are not issued in English must be translated by an official translator and certified by the Ministry of For- eign Affairs of the country and by the nearest Jamaican Mission or Honorary Consulate.

Marriage Officers

Marriage officers may be requested through the registrar general’s department.

the marriage officer charges a fee for this

service. the amount is at his/her discretion.

  • You will be required to send notarised copies of all documents to the marriage officer before your arrival and to take

    original documents with you.

  • the marriage officer can arrange for the ceremony to take place in a church or at your desired location.

  • Marriage ceremonies may be conducted any day of the week.

After the wedding

Following the ceremony, you will receive a copy of the marriage register which shows proof of marriage. this is signed by the couple, their witnesses and the marriage officer. this is not a legal document and cannot be used to conduct business.

You or your marriage officer must source certified copies of your marriage certificate from the registrar general’s department. the process can take

from 7 to 21 working days. an express option is also available.

Once the original marriage certificate is issued by the Jamaican government, the certified copy is sent to your embassy/high Commission. after being legalised by your embassy/high Commission, the marriage will be recognised as a legal union in your country.
